Issue #17
Hello Reader! It’s Friday again!
Good to have you back. Time for a Soft weekend edition.
Here's a pro tip
One of the ways to achieve a goal is to be time-bound. So instead of saying “I’ll achieve goal A”, be specific by saying “I’ll achieve goal A in the space of X months”. Or weeks, years, etc.

Reactions to the white paper report.
Reactions to Lagos State Govt Whitepaper on #EndSARS Report
The Lagos State government, earlier in the week, disclosed its white paper on the report of the Lekki Tollgate shooting occurrence, submitted to it by Doris Okuwobi led Judicial Panel of Inquiry. The state government has accepted 11 out of the 34 recommendations by the Judicial Panel of Inquiry.
Gbenga Omotosho, the Commissioner for Information, remarked that the release of the white paper is in fulfilment of the promise of the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to respond to the report submitted by the panel.
Legal practitioners and Civil Society Organisations, however, faulted the state government’s white paper, saying it was stained and insensitive.
And the celebrities?
Top celebrities and #EndSARS advocates have declined the invitation of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for a peaceful walk that he tagged “A Walk For Peace”.
Some of the celebrities who reacted through their official social media handles include Folarin ‘Falz‘ Falana, Debo ‘Mr Macaroni‘ Adebayo, Seun Kuti, amongst others.
Falz responded by saying,
Please tell your governor that there is no “March for peace” without justice. He is still trying to deny the massacre that happened. All the lives that were wiped away unjustly. You set up a panel to investigate the matter. Panel don tell to you say people die by the hands of soldiers and policemen wey una send. Una still does no want do the right thing. And you’re here asking for a ‘peace march’. DISGRACEFUL
Also reacting, Mr Macaroni simply said,
Seun Kuti said in a statement on Channels TV
I don’t need to walk next to the governor before there is peace in Lagos; there has been peace in Lagos for many years and nobody has to walk anywhere for it. If there is justice, then we can discuss peace. There will be no need to walk for peace because justice itself is the walk of peace. The governor should walk the walk he is talking about by giving us justice.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami SAN, has made known the position of the Federal government during a live chat on Channels Television,
“It all depends on the perspective you look at it and the prevailing laws that are in contexts. When you talk about laws that are exclusively applicable to the federation and context of the actual situation, it is not out of place to conclude. What you make out of it is a function of the applicable laws. What I am saying is not a general statement but about the factual situation of applicability and enforceability,” He said.
Meta Ordered to sell Giphy
On Monday, Yeboah wrote a post about mergers and acquisitions (M&A) on Facebook using Paystack as an example.
However, not all M&A deals fall through because regulatory agencies are obligated to checkmate companies so they don't become a monopoly.
Last year, Facebook (now Meta) acquired Gyphy, a popular platform of sharable animated images for $315 million.
Now, the latest news is that the UK’s competition watchdog has told Facebook owner Meta to sell GIF-sharing platform Giphy in Britain’s first such move against so-called Big Tech in its efforts to bolster regulation of the sector.
So why did they reverse the deal?
The Competition and Markets Authority said the deal could harm social media users and U.K. advertisers. Meta said that it disagrees with the decision and that it’s considering an appeal. The regulator concluded that Meta’s acquisition of Giphy would reduce competition between social media platforms. It added that the deal has already removed Giphy as a potential challenger in the display ad market.
A panel found that Facebook would be able to increase its already significant market power in relation to other social media platforms by denying or limiting other platforms’ access to Giphy GIFs. This in turn would send more traffic to Facebook-owned sites – Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram – which already account for 73% of user time spent on social media in the U.K., the panel concluded.
