Chess In Slums
18 year old Adeoye Fawaz emerged as the winner of a chess tournament. Prior to this victory, Adeoye was a bus conductor in Oshodi, Lagos. He inhabited under the Oshodi bridge.
A Life-Changing Moment
Adeoye and 50 other homeless children were among those trained to play rudimentary chess by the Chess In Slums, a nonprofit organisation founded by Tunde Onokoya.
The 2 weeks competition, which concluded on Tuesday 14th December, 2021 veered at changing the narrative for children living in the slums. That indeed diamonds can be found in the rough.
Tunde Onokoya tweeted,
"Everyday for two weeks, we taught them our mantra and made them believe that it was possible to do great things from a small place".
"51 homeless children in one of the most dangerous ghettos in Nigeria showed up everyday for our chess training because they saw an opportunity to learn- A new lease of hope.
Some of are them orphans, while some ran away from their villages to seek greener pastures in Lagos."
More to the Wins
The Chess In Slums Africa, also offered mentorship to the trainees during the training. The organisation have also, through the initiative, made connections with orphanages, shelters, schools, as well as skills acquisition centres to help set these youngsters for better a future.
"...I now carry a great burden in my heart for those 51 children because now I know their names and I have seen what they can truly become if given an opportunity to let their light shine.
Even if it means going to sleep under the bridge with them...."
